What Are CBD Edibles?

As marijuana is becoming legal on an increasing scale, hemp products have also begun to appear in the spotlight more frequently. While these products have, in many cases, been around for quite some time, more varieties continue to appear as new research uncovers more potential uses for CBD oil products such as topical oils and edibles, and a better understanding of the health benefits of these products spreads within the population.

So what exactly are CBD edibles? CBD is the abbreviation used to signify cannabidiol, a property found in the cannabis plant, most notably the hemp variety. While both marijuana and hemp come from the same plant family (cannabis) the two plants are very different. Marijuana contains high amounts of THC, which is the component that produces a psychoactive “high”. Hemp, on the other hand, contains very little THC, with the focus instead being on CBD, which is NOT psychoactive, and does not produce a high.

Oils extracted from the hemp plant are called CBD oils, and are a common and effective treatment for a large variety of medical issues, such as suppression and treatment of epileptic seizures, anxiety disorders, insomnia, inflammation, chronic pain, post traumatic stress disorder, nausea, rheumatoid arthritis, general muscle and joint pain, neurological disorders, and is even believed to attack and inhibit cancer cells in some cases. These oils are then created into edible products, allowing for an easy and enjoyable method for the consumer to ingest this medicinal product.

CBD edibles come in a vast array of options, such as the well known brownies, cookies, spreads, candy, drinks, gummies, chocolate bars, pills and capsules, lozenges, chewing gum, and many other forms, in nearly unlimited flavors. These products typically fall into three categories – gastrointestinal, oral, and hybrid. Gastrointestinal products such as pills or foods are absorbed through the stomach, oral products like lollipops and hard candies are absorbed through the mouth, and hybrid products are absorbed both ways.

Gastrointestinal products typically take the longest to begin providing benefits, sometimes as much as two hours, but will last the longest. Oral products begin providing benefits near immediately, but tend to wear off the fastest, and hybrids fall somewhere in between the two. If you have never tried a CBD consumable before, you should consider starting slow and working your way up if you need to. An appropriate dosage depends on many factors, including your weight, tolerance level, the purpose of taking the product, pain level, and the type of product consumed, for example.

Lastly, it’s important to note that there are some products that contain THC in addition to CBD, so do your research before you buy if this is something you wish to avoid. If you currently take prescription medications, it’s also wise to talk to your doctor about possible side effects or drug interactions prior to using a CBD edible product. For most people, side effects are minimal outside very high doses, and is considered generally safe and well tolerated.
